The Points Show

Conrad Tokyo Review

By Aaron Anderson

Our trip to Japan was one of those trips you would call “A trip of a Lifetime.” I decided to take my dad back to Japan. He lived there when he was in his early 20’s and hadn’t been back for more than 35 years. My brother jumped in on the fun and came with us, so it made it even more special. We were in Japan from March 3 to March 10 and spent the first 6 nights in Osaka—staying at the Hilton Osaka. Our last night we were staying in Tokyo and we wanted it to be memorable. So we stayed at the Conrad Tokyo property…..one of the best, if not the best, hotel experiences I’ve ever had.

Booking

A standard room goes for well over $600 most nights throughout the year. We decided to book with points instead. We booked a “Twin City Room” with 95,000 Hilton Honors points. If you are looking to save points and have a free weekend night certificate with Hilton, you can redeem your certificate at this property. The great thing about Hilton award stays is that you DO NOT have to pay additional taxes and fees. You only pay with points.  I emailed the hotel months in advance to see if they would allow a third person in our room, and we were in luck! They said they would provide a complimentary roll-away bed for the third person.

Thanks to my Amex Hilton Aspire credit card, I get automatic Diamond status with Hilton. One of the benefits of being a Diamond Status member, is they give myself and one other person complimentary breakfast every morning during our stay. To my surprise, the Conrad Tokyo also gave the third person in our party free breakfast as well.

Location

Our flights home were booked using Alaska Airline miles, which allows one free stopover with each one-way ticket booked with miles. So we decided to fly from Osaka to Tokyo (instead of taking the bullet train). Once we landed at the Haneda Airport, we took the train and subway to the hotel. The Conrad Tokyo is only steps away from the Shiodome subway station, which makes getting around very easy.

The property is close to the Hama-rikyu Gardens and overlooks Tokyo Bay. From our room, you could Tokyo Skytree tower, which was especially cool at night. Popular areas such as Tokyo Tower, the Imperial Palace, Senso-ji Temple, and Shibuya crossing are all within 20-30 minutes by train or subway.

First Impressions and Checking in

WOW! We were greeted outside of the hotel and were escorted by multiple people up to the executive lounge for check-in. They acted as if they were expecting us all week. We were called by name the staff all seemed really happy that we were there. We were offered to check in either at the front desk, or to check in at the Executive Lounge. We opted to check in at the Executive Lounge, which I’m happy we did. When we checked in, we were offered bottles of water, tea, and juice and were each given a cool towel. We were offered an upgrade to a “Twin Suite City Corner” room. We only had to pay an additional $30 for the upgrade. And let me tell you, it was worth it. The staff made us feel like royalty and treated us like we were long lost friends. We loved every minute of the experience.

Executive Lounge located on the 37th floor.

We arrived at the perfect time: cocktail hour. And where do they have cocktail hour? Of course, the Executive Lounge. During cocktail hour, we were served complimentary food and drinks. Every staff member came by to introduce themselves and offered to take our pictures and serve us in any way. It was incredible.

Suite

Walking down the hallway to our suite was also quite the experience. The staff explained to us that the design was meant to model the torii gates of Kyoto. You know that you are surrounding yourself in luxury if you are impressed by the hallways.

We were staying in room 3444 on the 34th floor. The highest floor is the 37th, which is the same floor as the Executive Lounge. Our suite was 914 sqft. which was plenty of room for us. It had a separate living area and bedroom. We were also provided with pajamas, slippers, and bathrobes for all three of us. We were in full vacation mode for our last night in Japan. We were taking advantage of everything the Conrad Tokyo had to offer.

Conrad PJ’s and the famous rubber duck and mini stuffed Conrad bear.

Our beds were soft and comfortable. Even the roll away bed was great. The beds were situated directly across from the TV and the panoramic windows which boasted an incredible view of the city. We could even see Tokyo Skytree from our room

Amenities

The Conrad Tokyo has it all, but since we only stayed there for one night, and most of our time the next day was spent site seeing, we didn’t get to enjoy most amenities. The weight room is situated on the 27th floor and overlooks the pool, which is really incredible. The pool has a phenomenal view of the city and has loads of lounge chairs for you to relax in while you are enjoying the pool.

The Mizuki spa allowed for endless opportunities to pamper yourself. Yes, you can certainly spoil yourself with a wide variety of massages. But, you can also go hangout in the locker room area where you can relax in your own hot tub or spend some time in either the steam room or the sauna.

Food

We only had the opportunity to enjoy breakfast at Collage—which was pure joy. Since I am a Diamond member with Hilton, they allowed for me, my dad, and brother to all have complimentary breakfast. We could each order two meals from the al la cart menu, and have full access to the buffet. We partook of BOTH.

China Blue and Kazahana were both elegant restaurants and would be considered more expensive and higher end restaurants. Kazahana focused on serving Japanese cuisine, while China Blue focused on serving…..you guessed it….Chinese cuisine.

Cerise and Collage share the same space and appeared to share the same kitchen too. Twenty Eight had a more casual, “come and go” feel to it. At night time, there was a pianist playing while people dined and overlooked Tokyo Bay.

Overall Thoughts and Impressions

Putting it simply: I was blown away. I have never felt more catered to and felt more important while staying at a hotel. I wish that we had more time at the Conrad Tokyo so we could have enjoyed the property more, tried out some of the amenities, and dined at more restaurants.  We were definitely spoiled and treated like royalty, which made for an unforgettable experience. If you are traveling to Tokyo in the near future, consider staying at the Conrad Tokyo and prepare to be swept off your feet.
